At River School, our priority is to provide a safe, loving, and mindful place for children and their families.
We strive to help children develop social and emotional skills by providing a culture based on community, while at the same time honoring children’s unique individual way of being.
River teachers are not only facilitators of learning; we are observers and co-learners as well. Children search out knowledge through their investigations, and teachers share their own curiosities and wisdom alongside them. There is a strong focus on social collaboration, working in groups, where each child is an equal participant, having their thoughts and questions valued. We encourage students to be inquisitive, be respectful, embrace human differences, and to feel comfortable as the unique beings they are.

Beth Ashley
Owner, Director
Beth leads The River School with a deep commitment to creating a compassionate, nurturing, and home-like early childhood experience. Guided by a reverence for childhood and a belief in the wisdom inherent in each child, she has shaped the school into a place where families feel welcomed, teachers feel supported, and children feel truly seen.
Her work is rooted in the understanding that young children learn best in environments that honor their natural rhythms and invite them into meaningful connection—with themselves, with others, and with the living world around them. Beth is dedicated to strengthening children’s relationship with nature, offering daily experiences that encourage curiosity, reverence, and a sense of belonging in the outdoors.
Within the classroom, she champions open-ended play and rich artistic exploration, providing materials and environments that invite imagination, problem-solving, and joyful discovery. Beth believes deeply in the power of a calm, beautiful, and thoughtfully prepared space—one that echoes the warmth of home while offering the freedom and creative potential of a vibrant early childhood community.
Central to her philosophy is the understanding that children deserve to be heard and respected. She works to cultivate an atmosphere where children’s voices matter, their emotions are honored, and their individuality is celebrated. Under her leadership, The River School continues to grow as a place where childhood is protected, relationships are cherished, and learning unfolds gently through play, nature, and connection.

Miranda Bellefountaine
Assistant Teacher, Birch Classroom for Preschool/Introduction to School
Miranda is a native Mainer with a lifelong passion for nurturing and caring for young children. From an early age, she was fascinated by child development, a curiosity that led her to a career in international education. Over time, her work expanded to include early elementary special education, where she deepened her belief that early childhood is a sacred and foundational time in life.
Miranda’s path into education began with the realization that no matter where she was in the world, children share a universal language of play. She is continually amazed by the ways children can teach and expand the consciousness of the adults around them—if we are open to learning from them.
Before joining the River School team, Miranda worked in both international and special education settings. She lives in Falmouth with her husband and daughter, who also attends River School. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, practicing yoga, listening to music, and spending time with family and friends.
